stations, in new york city, are closed. have run dry. it's being called an unprecedented gas crisis in the city. also, we have gabby giffords' story. she came face-to-face with the man who shot her in court yesterday. her husband said he may have put a bullet in her head. but he can't dent her spirit. we're going to hear from astronaut mark kelly about his former congresswoman wife. the big announcement for walmart that is shaking up holiday shopping. black friday, starting earlier than ever. it's now moving to thursday, on thanksgiving. don't blame the messenger. >> that does not look fun. >> that's not exactly how you want to spend that wonderful, family day. >> all right, folks. let's get right to the escalating gas crisis in the northeast. widespread rationing is

expanding to include new york city and long island. abc's john muller is at a gas station right here in manhattan, where the lines have been extraordinarily long. good morning to you, john. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. and they still are long. take a look. they stretch for blocks. they are long. they are intense. we haven't seen anything like this since the 1970s. rationing in place. if you have an odd-numbered plate, you can fill up on an odd-numbered date. you have an even-numbered plate, you can fill up on an even-numbered date. officers here. they're directing traffic. they're keeping the peace. there's some hot tempers here. and they're making sure that today's the right day to fill up. this morning, day 11 of impossibly long lines and impossibly scarce gasoline. rationing has spread to new york city and long island. a massive humanity, starving for fuel with an increasingly short fuse. >> it's impossible. there is no gas or you wait three hours. >> reporter: many are running out before they even reach the pump. last night, a new york city cop there to help keep the peace,

helped a man push his car a final block. but in new york city, an orange county man accused of running down a police officer after he was told to move his car from a gas line for traffic. this morning, more than 500,000 customers across the region are still living without power. and many need the gas to keep generators running in frigid temperatures. >> it's bad. and it's cold. and now, we have no walls. we have no insulation. we have no floor. it's cold. >> reporter: ten days after the killer storm, mayor bloomberg finally taking action. putting in gas rationing by license plates. >> we have to do something. this is something that's practical and enforceable. >> reporter: this week's nor'easter adding to the problems with additional power outages and tanker deliveries disrupted. >> there's no gas in brooklyn. we came into manhattan to get gas. >> reporter: an hour and a half you said? >> two hours. >> reporter: the rationing, shortages and long lines expected to last at least a couple of weeks.

a very welcoming sign here. a tanker truck filling the gas station up with gas. we need more of these. this is expected to last for at least a couple of weeks. the rationing in new jersey working very well there. and new york and long island, hoping for similar results. back to you. >> thank you, john. now, to the looming fiscal cliff. everyone's taxes go up on new year's day if no deal is reached. and diane sawyer got an exclusive look at where republicans stand from house speaker john boehner yesterday. jon karl has more of that from washington. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. the speaker of the house told diane he is confident he can strike a deal with the president. but he also took a hard line on the central issue dividing them, tax increases. >> i've made it clear to the president, and i think i said, laid out yesterday, that raising taxes on small business people is the wrong prescription, given where our economy is. >> reporter: but raising taxes on the wealthy was a central issue of president obama's campaign. he talked about it in every, single campaign speech. >> the wealthiest americans got

tax cuts. tax cuts. try a tax cut. another trillion dollar tax cut that favors the wealthy. >> reporter: in her exclusive interview thursday, diane sawyer pressed the speaker on that. >> 60% of the voters have said that they are ready to raise these taxes. they are ready to have the wealthier americans pitch in here. >> i said yesterday that raising tax rates is unacceptable. >> reporter: the looming fiscal crisis has already affected financial markets, helping drive the dow below 13,000 for the first time since september. if a deal is not struck, virtually every american taxpayer will see a substantial increase in their taxes starting january 1st. during the last negotiations, speaker boehner's hands were tied because tea party conservatives opposed compromise. here's what he told george back then. >> there's no daylight between the tea party and me. >> reporter: what does he think of the tea party now?

>> we don't have a tea party caucus to speak of in the house. >> reporter: as he called increased tax rates unacceptable, the speaker told diane he was open to increasing tax rev by closing loopholes. >> i'm the most reasonable, responsible here in washington. the president knows this. he knows that he and i can work together. the election's over. now, it's time to get to work. >> reporter: in the interview, the speaker also said that he would no longer push for a full repeal of obama care. now, he later corrected that a few hours later, saying that full repeal is still his ultimate goal. but clearly, george, the president and the speaker have some battles ahead. >> no question about it. jon karl, thanks. now, to president obama. later today he will respond to the speaker, and lay out his approach to avoiding the fiscal cliff. we get more reporting from abc's jake tapper on that in a moment. first, take a look at this remarkable video right after the election. an emotional president, addressing his young campaign troops. >> i felt that the work i had

done in running for office, had come full-circle. because what you guys have done, says that the work that i've done is important. and i'm really proud of that. and i'm really proud of all of you. and what you have done -- [ applause ] >> jake, that is a side of the president we almost never see. >> reporter: it is, george. this is wednesday afternoon. he stopped by his campaign headquarters and spoke with about 700 or 800 volunteers. obviously, got very emotional. he was talking about his days as a young idealist, coming to chicago. and how much more effective and

intelligent these volunteers and campaign staffers are. one of the interesting things about this race is, top aides say, president obama considered this victory to be more meaningful in a lot of ways because it wasn't just hope and rhetoric. it was four years of the grueling process of governance. and still, these volunteers turned out. >> another difficult challenge ahead. that fiscal cliff that is looming. we're going to hear the first words from the president on that this afternoon. >> reporter: and the language won't be that different from what you've heard already. the president will talk about how everyone agrees that the middle-class tax cuts should be preserved. and that the voters clearly favored what he calls a balanced approach, which means raising taxes on the wealthier. he'll talk about a new government report, the congressional budget office saying, that if all these tax cuts expire, the damage to the economy would be very, very powerful. but if the tax cuts for the middle-class are preserved, it would actually be not nearly as bad. george? >> so, both sides saying they want compromise.

struck again. he was caught on camera holding up this credit union in idaho. forcing employees into a safe before getting away with a bag stuffed full of cash. the fbi believes he is the same person who hit several banks earlier this year, on a run from california to washington state. in one heist, he shot and seriously wounded a police officer. a $70,000 reward is now being offered to conversatiinformatio to his arrest. and former congresswoman gabrielle giffords stared down the gunman who shot her and a crowd of bystanders last year. more, now, from abc's ryan owens. >> reporter: in front of a courtroom packed with other victim, gabby giffords stood silently, face-to-face with the man who came so close to killing her. mr. loughner, you may have put a bullet through her head. but you haven't put a dent in her spirit. he spoke to diane sawyer about it last night on "world news." >> she stared into his eyes the

entire time. i saw a person who certainly has, you know, major mental illness. but also somebody who knew where he was and why he was there. >> reporter: the last time congresswoman giffords saw jared loughner was almost two years ago. he shot her at point-blank range as she met with constituents. he killed six and injured a dozen moore. pam simon was shot twice and almost died. >> i really think he wishes someone had intervened. >> reporter: loughner is a schizophrenic, severely mentally ill. he never got help. now, the 24-year-old finally is. locked up in a psychiatric ward in a federal prison. serving seven life sentences for one of the worst shootings in american history. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news, tucson, arizona. nestle is recalling its

good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. congressman jesse jackson jr. has been fighting to regain his mental health and return to public life. but this morning, he appears to be in a fight to stay out of jail. >> reporter: the son of civil rights icon jesse jackson was easily re-elected tuesday, with more than 60% of the vote. even though he dropped off the political scene months ago, to deal with bipolar depression. >> we're learning that congressman jesse jackson jr. of illinois has been re-elected. >> reporter: but jackson has been the subject of multiple fbi investigations, involving allegations of misuse of campaign funds and influence peddling. sources with the probe say he's now negotiating a possible guilty plea. >> the pressure is overwhelming when the fbi steps to you, particularly in a public corruption case because they're going to have a lot of evidence. >> reporter: investigators have been examining whether jackson used campaign funds to adorn his beautiful home in washington, d.c. recently on the market for $2.5 million. and there's allegations that

jackson bought a female friend a $40,000 rolex. and the justice department has been investigating whether jackson was somehow involved in former governor rod blagojevich's 2008 scheme to pedal the senate seat of barack obama. jackson has been seeking help at the mayo clinic in minnesota. he's missed 225 votes since. >> the fact is, congressman is under medical supervision. and is right now, regaining strength. >> reporter: he did no campaigning to speak of. releasing this october 20th robocall to constituents. >> your patience, your prayers and your support during this difficult time means more to me than you will ever know. >> reporter: in that video, jackson never even asked constituents to vote for him. his staff declined to comment. his lawyer did not return our calls. >> pierre, thanks. we're going to turn to big

news about holiday shopping. thursday is the new black. retailers want bargain-hunters in the stores earlier than ever. and bianna golodryga is here with more on how black thursday has replaced black friday. >> reporter: good morning, george. the surprising announcement that could shake up the business of holiday shopping. black friday has traditionally been the most important day for retailers. but if walmart and other stores have their way, thursday night is when true die-hard shoppers can find some of the best deals in town. not to mention being able to sleep in on friday morning. after years of early-morning stampedes and those black friday duels for deals, this year, the holiday shopping season will start earlier than ever. with walmart, sears and kmart saying they will begin sales at 8:00 thanksgiving night. >> there's a group of folks that want to shop early and get to bed earlier. >> reporter: the earlier hours could help capture more of those shoppers in what will be a

competitive season. the national retail federation expects holiday shopping will jump more than 4% this year. walmart says customers in its stores between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. thursday night will be guaranteed deals on a 32-inch tv, a blu-ray player, even an ipad 2, without having to worry that supplies will run out. >> you can eat your dinner, clean your dishes, buy at 8:00, go home and rest. and get back up at 5:00 and buy some more. >> reporter: but walmart's move isn't without critics. it comes just weeks after some employees threaten to picket the chain on the holiest day in retail. >> we've seen an increasingly attempt by retailers to bring people in earlier and earlier. >> reporter: retailers don't seem concerned. betting that even with less time to digest their turkey, shoppers will still show up after dinner to save. >> i think people around 7:00, 8:00, will say enough football.

>> these assaults are happening on women that may not want to call 911. >> reporter: a police sketch went out. a suspect, a very close likeness was arrested. it turns out, police say, he is no ordinary customer but a successful lawyer named danford grant. by all accounts, grant and his wife, jennifer, are a power couple. both attorneys. danford, a partner in a firm. jennifer, a supervisor in the criminal division of the seattle city attorney's office. her steady gaze, following him, as he was led out of court recently, gave away nothing. yet, court documents reveal behavior that's now being looked at closely. police say she moved her husband's car from the scene of his arrest, parked it in a random location near her home and didn't tell investigators for weeks. all the while, detectives were serving search warrants, looking for the car, hoping to find a folding knife, cell phones and other evidence. police say she also used her husband's card key to get into

the parking garage of his office shortly after the arrest. >> there could be severe consequences. and as a prosecuting attorney, one could argue that she should have known better. >> reporter: jennifer grant and her husband's attorney declined our request for an interview. the seattle attorney says she has been reassigned to responsibilities that do not entail courtroom prosecutorial work. her husband, the father of their three children, is now an accused serial rapist. he pleaded not guilty is out on bail, working on his own defense. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, abc news, seattle. and for more, now, let's bring in our legal team. nancy grace, host of "nancy grace." along with our own legal analyst, dan abrams. dan, let me begin with you. the wife, a prosecutor, knows they're looking for the car for weeks. why wasn't she arrested?

>> she has no obligation to speak to the police. but she can't lie to the police. and she can't obstruct justice. if authorities believe she moved the car, and this is the key point, with the intent to conceal evidence, with the intent to obstruct justice, they might charge her. as of now, they haven't done that. and there still has been ongoing negotiations between her lawyer and the authorities about finding the car and other issues. >> the twist here, nancy, is that the authorities are the office she works in, the city prosecutor's office. >> that's exactly correct. and what's going to matter here is the timeline. the arrest and charges go down on september 24. the car sits near the massage parlor. how the police don't know it's there, i don't know. but three days later, after the charges go down, she moves the car. she doesn't bring it home. if my car had run out of gas or the battery went dead, i get it

towed home. or i bring it home. no. she moves it closer to her home but doesn't bring it home. she takes a key card to his office out, uses it to go in the office and puts the card back. but here's the thing. i believe his laptop was in that car. if she wanted to obstruct the police, if she wanted to hide evidence, she's a pretty bad cleaner because she left the laptop. on that laptop, i believe, is going to be evidence regarding these rape victims, like how he found them. how he found out about their families. in one instance, as he was trying to rape a lady, he was saying, i know about your husband. you should leave him. he knew all about these women. >> the fact that the laptop was turned in, could that be the reason she was reassigned but not fired from her job at the city prosecutor's? >> i don't think there's going to be any real criminal charges against her. she did not aid and abet him in the rape. after the fact, it's not going to matter in a court of law.

maybe, maybe an obstruction charge for hiding this from the police. but another thing i think we haven't factored in, there's probably a lot of other women out there. i had cases myself, where in the asian culture, it's a great shame to have been raped. the victim thinks it's her fault. there's probably other women out there. and that laptop may have evidence as to their identities. >> this brings to the attorney under arrest. he's been charged with several different sexual assaults. yet, still allowed out on bail in his home. >> in a case like this, most of the time, someone will be released on bail. people will say they shouldn't be released on bail. but in most case, they are. the question becomes how much should the bail be? one question in this case, why was the bail reduced from $3 million to $1 million? he's going to be on an electronic monitoring bracelet to make sure he doesn't go anywhere. but people think, these are very serious crimes here. but the purpose of bail, remember, is to ensure he showed

up. to ensure he doesn't go anywhere. it's not intended to punish. and at this point, he hasn't been convicted. >> his passport has expired. so, he can't leave the country. >> no, it can't. but another issue of bail is to protect the community. with this number of alleged rape victims, i think he's a danger to the community. as to her, no charges. >> okay. nancy grace, dan abrams, thanks very much. let's get the weather from sam. >> we begin with pictures out of -- wait. let me just try this again because it's friday. we begin with pictures from mammoth mountain, california. the highest resort in california. this is near donner pass. this is a lot of snow. and this is a powerful system. watch what this does to the rest of the country. this picks up the snow and the gusty winds in the west and starts driving into the plains. by the central part of the weekend, we'll see from texas to minnesota, the possibility of strong to severe weather from this system.

scientists are out with a new warning about climate change. the average global temperature will increase by up to eight degrees by the year 2100. scientists say that would result in drastically higher ocean levels and more severe droughts and floods. other experts predict the temperature increase closer to three degrees. president obama will deliver his first postelection speech at the white house today, to urge congress to take action quickly to avoid that so-called fiscal cliff we're now hearing so much about. tax increases and spending cuts due to hit in january. one government report predicts unemployment will skyrocket to 9.1% if those spending cuts do go into effect. in an exclusive interview, house speaker john boehner told our diane sawyer, he's confident he can strike a deal with the president. but this tax increases are, and i do quote, unacceptable. unquote. surveillance cameras catching someone using a

there's some real oscar buzz surrounding the new version of a classical romantic masterpiece. tolstoy's love triangle, "anna karenina" stars ki s keira knig. we're happy to have keira back to "gma" to tell us about it. did you have any hesitation taking on a role like this? it's been done by such classics? greta garbo, vivian lee. >> i just said, sign me up. >> when i read the book, i was dreaming about it while reading it. your take on it in film is a little different than my memory of reading the book. >> you see, i read it when i was about 19. and i remembered her being almost saintly, you know?

and the victim. and then, i reread it last year. and suddenly went, oh. this is a lot darker and much stranger than i remember it being. >> and you certainly play her in a much darker way. you say, you think actually that tolstoy at times really disliked anna karenina. >> you have to think, whether she's the heroine or anti-heroine. she can be vicious and cruel. that's kind of what was interesting about her. she has all the assets to her character. >> i remember reading the book and thinking, how tragic it was she had to choose between her children and the love of her life. and yet, the way you play her in the movie, i almost couldn't forgive her for leaving her children. >> no. that was the big thing i had a massive problem with it and i think you do. how can you not really judge

somebody that does that? but also, you understand it. you know, this is somebody that's never experienced that kind of love before. and it is addictive. >> why are you leaving moscow? >> what else can i do? i had to be where you are. >> stop. that's enough. go back to kitty. >> no. >> this is wrong. >> it makes no difference. >> you have no right. >> it makes no difference. >> you must forget me. if you're a good man, you'll forget everything. >> and you, will you forget? >> yes. >> this movie is one of the most beautiful things i've ever watched from start-to-finish. it is gorgeous. the costumes are stunning. in one scene in particular, you wanted her dress to look like she was wearing a rumped bedsheet. >> yes, i did. and the amazing costume
